1920’s Great Gatsby Glamour with Glorious Diamonds

Imagine having to spend your working day dressed in gorgeous vintage clothing and draped in millions of dollars’ worth of diamonds. Throw in being up close and personal with Leonardo Di Caprio and Toby Maguire and you have just explained a dream job.

On the set of the new and highly anticipated movie ‘The Great Gatsby’, leading British actress Carey Mulligan was adorned in stunning diamond jewellery to show the level of decadence experienced by society’s elite at the height of the 1920s in America. Baz Luhrmann, the director of the film, wanted to create an enhanced version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel. This resulted in opulent costume design which included extravagant pieces of diamond jewellery.

The bespoke pieces for the film were worth millions of dollars! A security guard was employed to follow Ms Mulligan around as she wore the jewels. Carey told the Daily Mail that “There’d be diamond bracelets on each arm, and diamond earrings, and rings and strings of pearls around my neck. And I could see this guy in the corner watching me intently, in case I ran off with anything.”

Playing the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby was a rewarding experience for Carey Mulligan which was enriched by the opportunity to wear diamonds worth millions. However, the experience was also distracting as she had to tolerate the security guard following her and watching her while she was trying to work!
