Rubies are considered one of the four most precious stones in the world along with diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. Ruby stones are red in colour thanks to the presence of the element chromium. The name ruby comes from Latin word ruber which means red. Rubies are one of the most sought after gemstones in the world and it is probably in part to their colour and also their durability.
A ruby is nearly as hard as a diamond which makes them perfect for jewellery. With the varying qualities of such a natural element rubies can present many inclusions of which imperfections known as rutile needles also called silk can cause the ruby to be coloured from a very light pink to a deep burgundy red. Some jewellers have begun to classify the lightest coloured rubies as pink sapphires. A guideline to determine whether a stone is indeed ruby or pink sapphire is still being hotly debated by trade organisations such as the International Coloured Gemstone Association (ICA).
Rubies are on both the traditional list of stones which represent personal qualities associated with religious connections and the Gregorian Calendar as well as the more modern list of gemstones which are based on the birth month, in this case July. Their meaning is based on loose translations of religious documents as well as the history of the twelve zodiac signs which work to explain a person’s personal qualities based on the month they were born and how the stars were aligned at this time. The stone is also thought to deflect nightmares.
The inclusion of a birthstone into a jewellery design can enhance the piece from a thoughtful gift into a truly meaningful one. Diamond International’s Diamond and Ruby Engagement Ring is a perfect example of this. It is a popular design that adds history and meaning to an already significant gesture of love. Alternatively you can work with one of our creative artisans to design your own custom piece of jewellery using our collection of rare untreated loose ruby gemstones to create a masterpiece that will be admired for years to come.
