The Dos and Don’t’s of Cleaning Your Diamond Jewellery

Diamonds. They’re a girl’s best friend, the hardest natural substance on Earth and are made from super compressed carbon which has been formed over billions of years in the earth’s crust.

There’s nothing quite like the beauty and attraction of a natural diamond.

Diamonds are used in a variety of industrial applications due to their endurance and strength, and yet the oil from your finger is sufficient to dull the sparkling surface of your stone. This is anathema to the stunning surface of your diamond, and results in a lacklustre shine.

When you have a precious diamond item, no matter if you wear it every day or just on special occasions, you want to ensure that it looks its best at all times. We have brought together some of our top tips – some dos and don’ts, which will help to keep you shining. Read on to find out how you can best clean your diamond jewellery to ensure you are keeping it in pristine condition at all times.

Do

Clean your diamond jewellery regularly

As we mentioned above, one of the biggest issues facing your diamond is the fact that regular handling can cause the surface of your diamond to build up natural oils and dirt. When your diamond ring isn’t as clean as it should be it won’t sparkle and shine. You can get around this by cleaning your diamond regularly.

You can clean your diamond jewellery by washing it in a gentle solution of water with a few drops of a mild dish soap as often as is needed. After your bring your jewellery out of the washing solution, simply take a soft toothbrush and gently brush your gems to remove any remaining buildup or residue. You should keep a special toothbrush especially for washing your jewellery.

Be gentle

When handling your diamond be sure to be gentle, especially if you are washing an older gem setting. Don’t scrub at the diamonds, just use a gentle brushing motion. Rinse with water and then once you are done be sure to dry using a soft, lint-free cloth.

Don’t

Handle your diamond too much

Your hands produce natural oils which can cause a buildup of grease on the surface of your gems. You can get around this by being sure to not handle your gems too frequently. When taking jewellery off, use a soft cloth to give your gems a quick wipe before placing them in your jewellery box or safe.

The key to your diamond’s sparkle is the many facets which work like a series of mirrors to reflect light and to shine. Make sure you keep the surface clear to ensure that you continue to enjoy the beauty of your diamonds every time you wear them.

Use harmful chemicals or solutions

You should absolutely never use any kind of bleach or abrasive chemicals when cleaning your jewellery. You may damage the metals used in the setting if chlorine-based cleaners are applied,. Scratches could also result through the use of abrasives or harsh cleaning cloths.
